The Planning Process: Retirement Planning

Retirement is a stage in life that we all look forward to - a time to enjoy the fruits of our labor. But how well have you prepared? Whether you are 30 years old or 60, preparing for retirement is essential toward your goals for a secure financial future. The Mohr Group’s approach to investing – proper asset allocation, diversification, on-going research and examination of investment positions, and yearly portfolio reviews – will guide your Mohr Group representative to create the appropriate retirement plan for your situation based on your age, income needs and financial goals. With the selection of suitable investment vehicles and money managers, and the implementation of a retirement plan based on the principles of Modern Portfolio Theory, we can build a retirement portfolio to help meet your needs not only for today but for the future as well.

Enjoying a comfortable retirement or struggling to make ends meet are the two choices a retiree faces. Naturally we want to enjoy retirement but how you get there will depend not only on how well you have saved and invested throughout your working years, but once the decision to retire is made, what you do with your company retirement plan can play a significant role in your financial future. As newly retired, you will be faced with a myriad of questions. What is the retirement process? Should you keep your retirement money in the 401(k) plan or roll it over to an individual IRA? Should you take the annuity stream or lump sum? Will you out live your retirement nest egg? How much income can you afford to take?

This is an area where we truly shine. The Mohr Group has extensive experience and is extremely qualified to help answer these difficult questions and guide you through the entire retirement process. All your questions are answered clearly and concisely and you are given the knowledge to make the right financial decisions for you and your family. If income is needed, your Mohr Group Advisor's goal will be to design a plan to produce the income you need today while structuring the portfolio to keep the potential for future growth.

What We Do - Pre Retirement

Financial independence during retirement is a goal that many of us desire but rarely plan for adequately. We will evaluate any company-sponsor retirement plans, individual retirement accounts, savings accounts, and other sources of income. We will assist you in determining what may be a proper allocation of your existing 401(k) based on your objectives. The review of your current employer-sponsor retirement plan is crucial to ensure that the appropriate diversification is in place, your investments are of a high quality, your company stock allocation is of an appropriate proportion, and that your risk/reward expectation is in-line with your time horizon for retirement.

We can estimate how much you need to save to maintain your current lifestyle at retirement. In other words, we can calculate the amount of retirement savings that may be required to produce a set amount of income at retirement. For instance, if you have a monthly income need of $5,000, given a specific number of years and a hypothetical growth rate, we can project how much retirement savings may be required to produce that $5,000 per month of income based on a set of assumptions.

In addition, your Mohr Group Advisor can determine the appropriateness of specific investments. Additionally, we can help establish retirement accounts for individuals who do not have employer-sponsor plans in effect, such as IRAs, SEP IRAs, Single 401(k)s, and Simple IRAs. If you are in that situation, call us to arrange an appointment to determine which retirement plan would be best given your circumstances.

What We Do - Post Retirement

Once the decision to retire is made, the complexity involved in what to do next can be overwhelming. Some new retirees can simply rollover their pension plan or 401(k) to an IRA. But most new retirees have very critical decisions to make and many questions to ask before doing anything with their retirement money. One of the biggest decisions can be - do I take a lump sum pension distribution or the company’s annuity income plan? What are the advantages and disadvantages to both? How do I project how much income my family will need once I retire? How do I protect myself from outliving my retirement savings? As specialists in retirement planning, your Mohr Group professional can walk you through the entire process so that you understand the logic of each decision and the plan of action to sustain your financial goals.

The Plan

Your Mohr Group professional will help you establish a retirement plan based on diversification and an asset allocation strategy that will become a working blueprint for the building of your retirement portfolio. With your personalized asset allocation strategy firmly in place, we begin the selection process of specific investment management programs and investment vehicles to help you achieve your objectives.

After the implementation of a diversified asset allocation plan, we will meet on an annual basis to thoroughly review the performance of your portfolio and make any needed adjustments. We will also update any changes in your personal life, your income needs, your financial goals and objectives. This annual review is critical to staying on track with the financial health of you and your family.

Income Distribution

An important factor in developing your retirement portfolio is if and when income may be needed. If income is needed today, our investment strategy will be more conservative than if income is not needed for years to come. A more conservative portfolio will include more fixed income investments, such as government and corporate bonds, or other investments designed to provide income.

There are many strategic decisions involved in establishing income for retirees. There are specific IRS rules for withdrawing money from a retirement account if you are under age 59 1/2 or older than 70 1/2. These rules may be different if you have a Traditional IRA versus a Roth IRA. As specialists in retirement planning, we can guide you through this complex maze to help you make investment decisions in keeping with your situation and your goals. Call us to arrange an appointment to discuss your retirement options. Also visit the Investment Planning section to learn more about the process of how a retirement portfolio is constructed.
